Not sure it will help you or not, but I once wanted to turn my drill press very slowly. I took the drive belt off and ran the spindle with a socket on the end of my VSR cordless drill. Worked great for what I wanted to do.

How about using something like these Rod End Bolt Blanks from McMaster-Carr 6065K171. You can drill & thread them to your liking.

Don't take it personally. I've been looking at it and would love to give it a new home, and I wouldn't even try to talk you down on the price. I have big screw hooks, the kind sold to hang bikes and such, in the rafters of my garage. Long pieces are off the floor, easy to get to, and even 20 footers aren't a problem.
