Re: Pneumatic control

Pipe the exhaust to the outside of the box. Might want a silencer or diffuser depending on the noise.

Pallet jacks are also a useful item. Check out the local rental outfits. You should be able to find pallet jacks, forklifts in assorted sizes, engine hoists, comealongs, and most other bits of rigging.

Re: Newbie getting in over my head?

Travel is not that big a deal in the great scheme. I took the wife on a several day trip halfway across the country for a mill.

Have you looked in the Phoenix area, some folks have had good success there.

Re: Packing a tube for bending

Here is a procedure I use for tight bends. Make up a die by cutting a groove of suitable diameter/radius and width in a piece of round stock. Next the grooved piece is cut into a 180 degree section and two 90 degree sections. The two 90 degree bits are attached to a backing plate. The dies and piece...

Salt should probably not be on the list, SS is susceptible to stress cracking when exposed to chlorides at relatively low temperatures.

unusual milling

So much for a pristine environment. Saw a bank of these going sculptures in a marble quarry in Italy last month; they get hosed down periodically to control dust. Need a large copy of a sculpture? Run once to digitize, then run again to make as many copies as needed. When they are running, the doors...

Re: coolant question

For splash shields, I have an assortment of pieces of sheet metal, flat, bent, curved, etc. Those with a few spring clamps enable one to assemble a shield to fit most situations.

Re: Interference fit

At a real railroad, the C&T, we have disassembled and reassembled a number of wheel sets, some with new axles, some with new wheels, and some a mix. In the 6-8" wheel seat diameter range, an interference of .001 inch per inch works well and gives a pressing pressure in the range of 50 tons....

Re: Proof testing cable clamps

For a simple load measurement, use a small hydraulic cylinder. Fill one with oil, connect a pressure guage to the appropriate end for compression or tension loading, and calculate the applied load from the net area of the cylinder, if you are using the rod end. I used a similar rig for load testing ...

Re: VFD Wiring

Agree, frequently, wire not suitable for the application is used. A proper cable might have had red, blue, black, and green conductors. Not quite as easy to come by as a scrap of common cable on hand. There is nothing wrong with applying tape of the correct color over a conductor of the wrong color ...
