Re: stub arbor vs. slitting saw arbor

I use slitting saws mostly on AL but also on steel. The first time I was hesitant and had a tiny DOC therefore the saw was cutting with a couple of theet. After gaining confidence I got some guts and increased DOC and feed, the noise changed and clearly a lot more theet were working. You can get a g...

Re: Tail-stock die-holders

Steve, regarding power threading taps or dies I can only tell you the frequency of breaking taps or ruining a tread with a die hes gone done exponentially since I started this hobby and learned the hard way. I have tapped in steel since I was 11 year old and broke my fair share of taps, every failur...

Re: Turning Crank Question

If this is your design then everything goes and Russ answer is fine, but if the crankcase is something you got as a casting or you have to machine according to some plan, then the entire connecting rod big end must be able to revolve inside the crankcase and things get more complicated. If you are f...

Re: Pocketing

Thanks, why did I not think of that. To paraprase your instructions ... Work the 12:00 and 3:00 sides trusting the dials with allowance for the actual mill dia. Stopping at 1:30 and 4:30. I am milling conventional and in the positive direction. Now I have two sides to reference a measure. Reverse th...

Pocketing

If I go conventional milling two of the side are cut going in the negative dial direction which does not allow to overshoot the target and reverse to offset the backlask. Working always in the positive dial direction forces to climb mill on two of the sides, not desirable. Now that I think of it the...

Re: Dial Caliper disassembly

I did clean it and god rid of the "tick" but I was only able to separate the slider from the ruler. The clock mechanism must be glued on, no fasteners clips or snaps. There was an incredible amount of crud. I have a vernier from the middle school shop days, is metric 0.1 mm nonius and 128t...

Re: Using a mill as a press

I often understand what a word means because I know the word in Greek. You'd be shocked to know how may of the words you use daily are of Greek origin I know exactly what you mean. Being born in Italy I had my share of classical education where Latin and Greek is heavily emphasized. I realy often o...

brinelling the spindle bearings.
Harold! Brinelling? Is that a real word or you just made it up? Although it make perfect sense.
That what I like of the English language: the ease of creating new words that replace a whole sentence.

Re: Dial Caliper disassembly

Steve, is a NO brand, so much so that I use it dayly and can't recall. Is down in the shop.

Nobody said it can not be done so I am going to try, mindful of taking steps not to loose parts.
