Re: Loco-Notes by Gary Kubicek
I also have Loco-Notes 1, 1a, 2, 2a, 3, 3a and 3b. Picked these up at a LALS President's Auction. Gary had passed by the time I joined the club in the mid 70's. Cary Stewart may weigh in, he knows this history...

Favorite filler for cast iron?
My Coventry castings on the 3/4" D30 0-6-0 have a worm hole or two; some have some pits below the surface. As these are NOT John K's Friends Yankee Shop Models castings I can't expect him to replace them. Mostly cosmetic, but one connects the outside of a cylinder head to the counterbore the pi...

Re: 3/4" Coventry D30 Loco - Exhaust Passages
Here a crude sketch. The "counterbore for tooling purposes" location would allow an easy insertion of a 'plug nickel'!

3/4" Coventry D30 Loco - Exhaust Passages
On the Coventry/Friends Models 3/4" D30 0-6-0, there are very nice cored steam chest exhaust passages. The left and right half passages meet in the middle. For fixturing purposes to drill the mating bolts, Coventry has the passages counterbored where the left and right halves meet. There is a r...

Re: 3-1/2" Gaugers - Smokebox Access
Coventry’s design used a largish flange on the smoke box front that was just a push fit into the smoke box. There were no screws or bolts and all the ones you see are dummies. On Coventry's D30, the boiler to smokebox joint and the smokebox to smokebox face joints are 16 each slotted round head 3-4...

3-1/2" Gaugers - Smokebox Access
Working on my Coventry B&O D30 0-6-0. In practice, does anybody on run day go in the actual smokebox door or just remove the entire smokebox front? I can't see any real work being done through the smaller door, and not sure I want to mess with 12 door dogs. 32 bolts on the front, are 8 real ones...
