Re: tooling plate
Flathead screws made from threaded rod might be better than socket head set screws; you could use a pick to clean the slot before unscrewing them, rather than trying to dig or blow chips out of the socket.

Re: Wavy Parallels. What are they good for?
A former employer had a few. I liked them because they didn't fall over like thin parallels, when I opened the jaws to change parts.

It worked, but it was very slow. It also risked introducing runout. I'd think you'd have to work pretty hard to get any detectable runout. My concern would be introducing low (high?) spots that would reduce the grip on the tool. On the other hand, if your socket is buggered and the proper MT taper ...

Morse taper end mills
So, I'm flipping through my 1940s "Audel's Machinist and Tool Maker's Handy Book", and starting on page 702 there are some pictures and discussion of... tang drive Morse taper end mills. There's a picture of a two-flute end mill marked "P&W". There was a picture of a tang dri...

I was looking at the lapping section in my 1940s Audel's machinists manual and found a comment that taper laps were sometimes made, but they recommended against their use. They didn't say why, though. I also found a comment from someone who had a tailstock with a badly damaged socket. He cut the tan...

Re: metric drill set explained?
So that'd be 60 drills for the 1-6mm set and 40 for the other one? I'll look for Dormer, then.
I'll see if anything turns up for "100 piece set." What I keep getting from web searches are 13pc 1 to 13mm sets with 1mm steps and some 20pc sets with a few random x.5mm sizes tossed in.

metric drill set explained?
So now that I'm using metric drills more often now I thought I'd look into a metric drill set. Perhaps I'm missing something obvious... In a complete "Imperial" drill set there are fractional, number, and letter drills. These are actually three separate standards, lumped together because e...

Re: lapping internal taper?
Well, does the finish of the internal taper even matter, as long as the collet isn't grunchy when you pull it in?

tooling plate
Having seen tooling plates in pictures and marveling at how convenient they appeared to be, I decided I should have one too. Looking at the situation further... what do you do about chips?! I haven't seen any pictures of plates with plugs in the unused holes. And if you raised the plate up on stando...
