Re: Help Identify Tool Chests

Tom-- Here is a link to the the thread and picture of the machinist chest I restored using a LOT of help from this forum's members. The picture shows a good view of the (missing) front cover I had to build for it. (Just scroll down about three posts.) https://www.chaski.org/homemachinist/viewtopic.p...

CAD Software -- free

All--

Do you use any free CAD software? How do you like it?

Re: Help Identify Tool Chests

Tom-- I restored a chest some time ago. Building a front cover is relatively easy. Some of the older chests are worth surprising amounts. The one I restored is almost identical to this one . . . https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/storage-case-pieces/cabinets/antique-eight-drawer-oak-machinists-chest-...

Re: Help Identify Tool Chests

jcfx--

They are not mine. I'm trying to help a friend figure out if there is any value in any of them. I think there may be with the top case.

But I am not sure.

Re: Help Identify Tool Chests

All--

I found the B*B cases at online auctions. They are inexpensive watchmakers chests. I found two; $65 and $75.

But how about that top chest? It looks like a machinist chest for sure. What do you think?

Re: Basic reaming mistake

Conrad and Harold--

Mistake #2: I had a choke hold on that reamer. All of the shank was stuck up in the collet. Thank you for the guidance.

When I reamed holes for the earlier engines, I probably gripped the shank more like it should be held.

Re: Made some quick change tool holders

Glenn--

Regarding single phase and spool down . . . I could see cranking it up, then shutting it off almost as soon as the tap engaged.

Like liveaboard said, some experience and broken taps would teach you a lot.

Re: Made some quick change tool holders

Bill and liveaboard--

Do you slow the spindle down as much as possible?
