Re: crankpin ends
thanks. I think I found a good way to fake it, thanks to Mr. Porter. Hole through pin, nut goes on the inside. That's some mighty fine work to be done in 1" scale. The construction series I found on the 1" scale engine does not have the flange integral with the crankpin, builder must have ...

crankpin ends
I found this image of a 5" gauge engine in the UK. I'd like to do my pin ends like this as opposed to a hex fastener. I see that the FN and Chloe are drawn with a round disk with flats milled on for a wrench, which is less objectionable to me than the hex, but still not what I am looking for. D...

Re: Built up cylinder sealing
I did this and used Loctite 510, after messing around trying to silver braze and trying several other sealants. It only hardens in the absence of air, so any that gets where it shouldn't be can be blown out with air after the part you want sets up. I've not tried it on steam yet, but it is good at 1...

Re: Argent Lumber 3 spot
I didn't like the look of the automatic and steam powered cylinder cocks. With this engine, they are pretty prominent because of the sloped cylinders I started out with some 1/8" NPT to flare adaptors, by the time it was done it would have been about as easy to start from a hunk of hex stock. T...

I bought a pair of these, then ended up going a different route. I opened the package, but never installed them.

Re: Modeling Corrugated Sheet Steel
That's a good idea.... Spline profiles might work even better.
OP, do you have a dividing head to go with the mill?

Link and pin pockets/couplers
I know about Roll Models and Fisher Detail Foundry's offerings, are there others? I could swear I saw one like "frontpocket.jpg" advertised somewhere - this is for 2 1/2" scale. I've luckily run into a source for casting bronze from my patterns, Cast arn may come later. Before I start...

I would be interested in seeing the drawings as well. I am ACAD compatible.

Cylinder cocks
I'm curious if anyone has tried to make cocks that look and operate prototypically. I've about noodled out a way to make them w/o castings, though I could cast if needed. We had to have a new one machined from stock to replace a missing one on an engine at the museum, so I am familiar with how proto...

Re: Lapping in bushings
On Timesaver, I recently used this to lap D valves and valve seats dead flat. Yes, their literature says the abrasive breaks down under use, which is what I found, I had to "freshen" or completely replace my puddle of timesaver + oil. They have a yellow grade for brass/bronze, and a green ...

Re: I Don't Know Why I Ever Got Involved...
I've never tried it, but it's claimed that a broken tap or drill stuck in non-ferrous material can be removed with alum. It should also work with a steel screw. Dick, there is an endorsement for carbon steel taps in what you said. I broke one off in the (of course) last hole to be tapped in a hand ...
