Re: Surface plate coming tomorrow. How to get it on the sta
Will the stand design allow straps around the slab while it is being set into place? Or is it the usual leg-up angle all round sort of 'socket'? For the usual, I've put 2x4s across the narrow direction, set the slab on those, taken the straps off the slab. Then rigged a couple of jacks from undernea...

the difference was not measurable with my digital calipers (not even a thousandth of an inch). Calipers are good for helping keep track of gross measurements. For accurate measuring of diameters, one should use micrometers. Dial or test indicators are good for checking run out in a part or setup. C...

Re: Home Built Puller
One of the tricks with pullers is to put the thing on and tension it up tight. If it doesn't pop off then give the end of the puller
screw a sharp rap with a lump hammer. Usually that will shock the unit into popping off.

Which is why I'm rebuilding my BenchMaster. It wouldn't hold the tolerances needed for me to build an engine. It was fine
for plowing around on boat and tractor parts but doing a scale engine would have been a real hit and miss proposition.
Pun intended!!
Take care,

What I really hate is seeing the government ruin machines, not just through inadvertence, but as a matter of practice. Because, hey, they don't have to work for the money to replace them! People who have made food stamps and welfare a lifestyle should have to go out and oil the machinery Uncle Sam ...

Those old machines had enough 'stout' to really rip off the chips. Mighty impressive.

Re: Tool Abuse
It's like trying to tell people about 'backlash' in a machine! Do you remember the 'Bull of the Woods' cartoons? One I will always remember is an old hand standing in front of a big 'ol lathe, that has shims sticking out all over, and he's holding a mallet. He's showing the new guy about the machine...

Re: Tool Abuse
No argument here Harold. I think we're saying very much the same thing but I'm coming at it from a different angle. I think what I should have said, in addition to the rest, was that from my view point I don't consider a rub down and a coat of paint a rebuild, Neither do you. If the machine were to ...

Re: Tool Abuse
I agree, Harold, but what I'm saying is that unless the rust and pitting have really destroyed most of the important surfaces the machine can usually be saved. I cases of lighter attack the machine may only require a good cleaning to make it useable. I dare say that most folks don't need or couldn't...

Re: Tool Abuse
I view rust pitting the same way as hand scraped surfaces. As long as most of the surface is good for a bearing, it' good to
go. Look closely at that old mill and rub the surfaces with a bit of fine sandpaper. It may surprise you.
