I forgot to include the reservoir picture. As shown is the rough casting with just the chucking spigot machined to a collet diameter. There is a lot more to be done.

Re: Furnace Silver Soldering
The pictures show my second attempt with Easy-Flo 45. Major difference between the first and second try was a wire form on the inside of the upper part and a heavier weight on the upper part. The end result is acceptable. A fillet was form on both outside and the inside. The internal joint was fille...

Re: Furnace Silver Soldering
I have also been thinking of a soft solder. I want to avoid lead as it oxidizes. There are silver bearing lead free solders around that melt between 400F and 500F. One I found that has a re-melt temperature of 700F. Soft solder would be a lot easier to work with. Attached is a cut out picture of the...

Re: Furnace Silver Soldering
Yes, cleaning it with acetone after blasting is fine, and it will solder.....but try it with out cleaning with acetone, you'll be surprised how the tiny bit of dust left behind will prevent solder from flowing....that's what I was saying about the original posting here.....looks to be like he sand ...

Re: Furnace Silver Soldering
Thank you to all of you for taking the time to respond to my question. My wife is out of town for a couple of days visiting her sister giving me an entire uninterrupted day to focus on my project. My conclusions are much the same as those submitted. I. E.: The temperature was too high, the heat time...

Furnace Silver Soldering
I'm trying to furnace silver solder the two halves of a 1.6" scale brass sight feed lubricator condenser. The attached photo is pretty self explanatory. On the left is a condenser assembled. it is about 1" diameter. On it's right is the condenser opened showing the two separate halves. The...

Re: Kerosene Headlight Chimney ****SOLD****
I have received a request for more chimneys. If anyone is interested in the chimney for their use, please let me know and I'll have it/them made with this batch. I expect the price to remain the same, or close to the previous price. One chimney cost $27 for the first chimney including USPS Priority ...

Re: steam line insulation ideas?
I like to use a dense cotton string, like chalk line, wound fairly tight, super glue the ends to keep the string in place, then cover the with flat or satin surface thin wall heat shrink tubing. When shrunk the tubing has a slight ripple effect that simulates a wound insulation. The cotton string is...

Re: Investment Removal
Sand-blast it out... thin pipe sealed on the end, but with a slot in the side near the end. Blow mild abrasive through it while you rotate the ball and raise and lower it. Keep the large opening of the product aimed down so the casting material can fall/blow out. just don't overdo it and wear a hol...

Investment Removal
Does anyone have a method to remove residual investment from a hallow brass casting. I'm casting condensers for sight feed lubricators. The attached photo shows a condenser casting sectioned to check wall thickness and to proof machining dimensions. The amount of residual investment is obvious. The ...

Traction Improver
My little Disney 4-4-0 while being a lovely engine that steams quite well it is lacking in traction effort. I added nearly 60 pounds of lead, mostly in the cab area, and re-sprung the drivers to concentrate as much of the loco weight on the drivers as possible. That helped a lot. But is still lackin...
