Having recently lapped in a throttle valve I can assure you until it looks like two glass smooth surfaces you are going to have a leak. It was suggested to me to use some fancy expensive lapping compound and I found that to be a useless endeavor. I would go to the compound after using 3000 grit pape...

I highly doubt that either has the ability to steam. The one you can easily tell its mainly made of wood with brass wrapping. I think a picture of the backhead would tell the tale.

set screws only for holding a sprocket on a shaft is asking for constant problems. Yes in a perfect world where there are no oops I hit the reverse switch, or wheels slipping and grabbing for traction you would likely be ok. Much better to key it together and not have to dig out set screws that have...

The market has changed as good tools are always getting harder to come by. 3K was a pretty good deal and although I don't need much there I wouldn't of minded having another set of Kennedy boxes.

there is nothing wrong with regular scalecoat paint on a locomotive so long as its applied correctly. It was the best thing out there for professional looking paint jobs on like HO model trains but to me its a bit thin for large objects, that and its really no longer available.
