Re: Hello From New Guy In TX
As a relative new person to machining myself, I can understand maybe having some doubts about your acquisitions. Only you know what it is you hope to do, how much space you have, etc. But if I were in your position, I would hang on to them for a while, at least. I don't think either of them are over...

That's probably true for many of us.

Re: What is the purpose........
Probably just vanity. So the machinist could make sure his hair was combed and he didn't have grease on his face before leaving his station. Though I suppose they could also be used to get a chip out of your eye. It is (widely?) reported that guys used to routinely hide a buck or two underneath them...

What size rotary table?
I've been looking at rotary tables for my Millrite for a while and am getting closer to pulling the trigger, but I have a question about size. I have the standard 7" x 27" table -- what is the most practical size RT to use? I've been leaning toward an 8", but wondered if a 10" is...

Re: Good tools/Bad tools
My metalworking is conducted more along the lines of woodworking where I cut, test, sand and test until it fits. I can "sneak" up to an accurate fit, but not with the repeatability required of a precision machinist like yourself. This technique absolutely has its place in metalworking and...

Re: Fly cutters
Someone has earlier posted some very helpful photos showing the proper profile. I thought I had saved them, but couldn't find them later.
So I, too, would appreciate any tips on this.

Re: Show us your lathe!
Thanks, Ted.
Yeah, I don't think I could ever part with it; I'm a sentimental fool (with a rather full house as a consequence!) So the plan is to supplement it.

Re: Show us your lathe!
Awesome way to remember Dad! Listen carefully, the lathe may be saying "Thrice his size." Thanks, I do miss dad and working with his tools both reminds me of him and keeps him close to me. And I hope it's not saying "thrice". I think I can squeeze a 12" x 36" in somewh...
