Re: liability Insurance

Hello all, I’ve been in touch in Brian Merriam owner of American insurance Agency, located in Schnectedy, NY. Brian’s approach is a bit different than Specality Insurance, in that they would like to reach out to everyone who may be interested in liability insurance and Build a base of possible clien...

Bradford Milling Machine

Can anyone recommend a Bradford Milling Machines. Appears to be maybe a 1980’s vintage Bridgeport clone, in decent shape, and well cared for. Curious what kind of a reputation they have? No idea yet what the asking price is.

Thanks
Glenn

Re: Spark arrester design

On an earlier thread a couple of people who have operated these conical shaped stacks on full sized locomotives said they did not work, as the shape and various apparatus inside the stack kills draft. Some do indeed capture sparks, but renders the boiler more or less useless. Another sidelight I rem...

Re: liability Insurance

Another update - not much to add. I checked again this week, was advised three of their underwriters declined to insure because it’s not a commercial operation. mike is awaiting additional responses from his other contacts. He will advise when he hears something positive.

Re: Spark arrester design

Thanks Marty, the only thing I was able to find locally is some bronze “hardware cloth”. Maybe 1/8” mesh size. Hardware store also had some 1/4” galvanized screen, but it didn’t look durable enuf. And way to large to capture embers. The cloth is Probably to fine a mesh size, but at least it’s a star...

Re: Spark arrester design

Marty, what mesh size are you using? Does your design inhibit draft to much?

Thanks

Spark arrester design

Hello all, Fire season is upon us here in the Northwest. Almost 1000 wildland fires in Washington and Oregon since January. I’d like to find a way to operate my coal-fired Ottaway this summer, if possible. Anybody have suggestions or a design for a spark arrester that I could fit to a smokestack? Th...

Track Standards

Does anybody know if Clubs adhere to any de facto safety standards for setting superelevation on curves or leveling track? If so, any numbers? For example, Iam leveling and tamping some mainline I finished laying, and trying to level all low spots that drop over 1/4” per foot across the track. Also ...

Re: Starting over on a new CliShay project

Russ, alas, I think Everettt Engineering was unresponsive to the last KLS boiler build. Apparently they recommended a sub and the guy never responded to multiple emails and phone calls. Years ago they had S stamp welders on staff, but maybe now they are all gone?? Still might be worth a phone call. ...

Re: Your RR grading methods??

Ryan, you might email some of the New Zealand Live steamer clubs and ask how they construct curves with groovy track. I’ve heard that’s all they use there. There must be a procedure for doing so. However, can’t help feeling it could turn into a real PITA. Just a side comment - once in a great while ...

Re: Woodinville Shops

Russ, I thought about a can of gold paint- actually I just now remembered one in my paint locker - from 20 years ago. Have to go see if it still works. I did order a plated spike from the guy in Calif. it’s 6” long, so I plan to lop off the bottom 3” and grind the end to a bevel, so,it drives into m...

Re: Your RR grading methods??

Ryan, here’s the method I finally adopted to set gauge while laying track. First I bend and lay one side of the rail in a continuous long line. Then spike the rail to one side of the ties to hold the desired radius. Then starting at one end, pull the opposite side of the rail into guage using two tr...
