Re: Lathe Inserts
Rex: I second Steve's comment, this is far from simple. First though: Why carbide at all? A "good" properly sharpened HSS tool will do most things in aluminum and mild steel. Do you have the spindle speed and rigidity to take advantage of carbide? There are some speed and feed guides aroun...

Gentlemen:
What and interesting discussion and I do appreciate the Civil Tone. I do read PM on occasion. The Antique Machinery and Equipment area is excellent.
Thanks to all of you.

Re: OPENING A CAN OF WORMS
I have no dog in this fight but do have some experience trying to put in place industrial standards. I would strongly suggest NO national or international enforcement organization, maybe some education.

Re: Are Engineers the Most Obnoxious People in the Universe?
A good engineer talks to the wrench guy and ask. What do you think? My personal opinion is that all engineers should spend 4 years in the field and then go get their professional credentials. Dave C. Some of the best advice an aspiring engineer can get. Along with "Keep your mouth shut and ear...

Re: Are these the largest drivers ever made?
I always thought that the Camden and Amboy 6-2-0s had the biggest wheels, but I don't remember exactly what they were. I do believe that the ones you show were larger. I think the C&A engines were somewhere around 8 1/2 feet or somewhere around there. Anyway, it was a funny looking locomotive. ...
Re: Ways
Went to a NAPA parts store today, from curiosity, to see if a rebuild kit is available (they used to be commonplace). Yep, there's one in California (I'm in Washington), and it costs almost the same as a new cylinder. Harold As a guy who has rebuilt more than a couple wheel and master cylinders I f...

Re: NPT Pipe Threads - another can of worms?
Be careful when assuming the threads on a pipe as well as couplings are NPT. I have purchased 21' sticks and the thread protectors as well as the pipes themselves had straight cut threads. Throw the couplings that come on those pipes directly into the recycle bid as one might assume later that they...

Re: NPT Pipe Threads - another can of worms?
Hi There, That doesn't look like a pipe thread to me. A pipe thread would be cut with a die, not single pointed and would be tapered. I can't imagine any shop setting up to cut a taper on a lathe for a one off There are NPT and NPS pipe threads. NPT is National Pipe Tapered and NPS is National Pipe...

NPT Pipe Threads - another can of worms?
Folks: I received this 1/2-NPT threaded SST pipe from a commercial shop, evidently single pointed. Looking for your opinion on the threading and width of the relief, as in why have a relief at all when the thread runs out into space? I have never single pointed a thread so looking for education here...
