Re: Building a Kozo
The 1.5" scale section in the A3 book has a couple of problems. First, the dimensions of the footboard didn't follow rule#2 from my prior post and puts the running board supports in the wrong place. Second, the boiler drawing places the steam dome 2" too far forward. I suspect that the Hei...

Re: Building a Kozo
Here's my experience with doubling the A3. 1) Any part dimension that's inside the frame or is a longitudinal dimension can be doubled. 2) Any lateral part that extends across the frame needed to be split. Use the dimension between the frame's outer surfaces and double the portion(s) that extend out...

Re: Building a Kozo
A pickup truck bed works for many locos. My A3 plus tender just fits in 6'.

Re: Engine project idea - Winston-Salem Southbound 2-8-0
If you were to join us at CSP&P you'd meet a fair number of members who have built locos. Of course, you'd also get lots of opinions, not all the same (just like here).

Re: Building a Kozo
On the A3, Kozo shows how to build most of the fittings, the axle pump, the whistle, the water glass, etc. I chose to buy fittings, glass, whistle, injectors, boiler. So there's a big cost difference possible trading $ for time.

Re: Building a Kozo
You could certainly scale up a 5" gauge loco to 7.5" gauge.

Are you going to bring the chassis to CSP&P meet? Would love to see it "in person".

Re: A3 Switcher Lathe Bit
The inserts will work, but of course you need a holder to fit the insert, and the holder itself is likely to have the same rubbing issue. The pockets you're making have an inner diameter of only 5/8". If you know the size of the lathe bit blank, you can draw it up in CAD to determine the side r...

Re: A3 Switcher Lathe Bit
The illustration is 30 degrees total, meaning the "walls" of the pocket have a slope of 15 degrees relative to the axle. This is cosmetic and a difference of a few degrees won't be noticeable. This operation is known as trepanning. You will need to grind the sides of the bit as well to pre...

It moved under its own power before - air compressor mounted on a flat car.
