Harold:
I have worked professionally with several suburb machinists.
Your advice is directly in line with theirs. I am listening.
Point made.

We are most fortunate to have a Master Machinist share his knowledge with us.
I keep learning from Harold, because he chooses to offer us his advice, from decades of proper shop practice.
Thank you Harold.

Re: Project: N&W class J on 5"gauge

Thanks, Steamchris. I understand now.
New word in use for me: "lanterns." I assume those are the middle pieces between the top and bottom cylinders.
Understandable description. Language translations can be fun.

Keep machining!

Russell:
Really familiar looking hot ends! And nice job machining, brazing, and cleaning them!!
Looking award to seeing what follows.
We always went ahead and brazed the end caps on. Making the rest of the parts per the drawings always worked in the end.

"Plugged"? Not sure what you mean. Assembled?
The difference in height is also confusing to me.
Thanks.

Re: New Supplier of Trucks

True on the actual scale issue. Not a huge deal, in my humble opinion.
And Allen Models also makes good arch bar trucks.
I easily fit vacuum brakes on mine.

Re: 3/4" Raritan 2-4-0 build.

That implies the tailstock spindle is NOT parallel and centered with the main spindle.
That can lead to the wheel holes not being correct to the axles.
Worth diagnosing and correctly aligning.
