Re: Manganese bronze

Today's solutions are tomorrow's problems. Boy , does that quote define my life in the mines . Being the master mechanic on the Bucryrus- Erie1650-B stripping shovel .. http://books.google.com/books?id=pj4MRJzFk_EC&pg=PA37&lpg=PA37&dq=Bucyrus-Erie+1650B&source=bl&ots=AA_47pLcpW&a...

Re: Manganese bronze

We used a lot of manganese bronze for crawler bushings on the stripping machines , tuf stuff indeed . Seems IIRC it had about the same tensile strength as 1144 steel and had 10 % machining value . Th castings were old and had been used and abused to where none of the bores were in spec .Center dista...

Re: Soft Jaws for my Chuck?

Bill , several ways to skin this cat . How much offset and how much stick out from the chuck ? Shims or sleeve to pad the jaws would work , just leave room to get an indicator to the shaft to measure your offset and keep stick out to less than 3 diameters. You need at least .030" thick material...

J . Howell Ball Turner

About a year ago , after reading about Mr. Jerry Howell plans and looking at the website for a while , I purchased 3 sets of plans . The " Farm Boy" IC engine , the" Sensitive Drill Press" , and his plans for a ball turner . There are many plans floating around on the web for bal...

Re: My Latest Bit Grind and Finish

Bill , one thing that I failed to address was DOC . Your finish pass will have a smaller DOC than your roughing cuts . I try to shoot for a .002" to .005" final cut and will bump the rpm up and slow the feed down , this gives me a better finish using HSS . At least it works most of the tim...

Re: My Latest Bit Grind and Finish

Bill , as Baddog and others have stated , speed it up . Just as you get those tooling marks on the mill , the lathe will give you the same thing . No expert here , but to me that is to slow . One thing you can do is to make your first cut and look at the finish . If it is not acceptable , change som...

Re: rusty steel

It digs into the edge with some small sparks, then rides up on the top of the piece, and dulls. I have several pieces of mystery metal , as you do . One serious bar of steel , 2" x 4" x different lengths of 2' and 6' . It has the mill scale on it and needs clean up before use . A fly cutt...
