I've seen it for sale on the ASSRA Forum..two different sizes of tungsten wire.

I've a manual for a K&E transit (I think that's the one) that mentions using a forked stick to wrap a couple lengths of spider silk while the spider is descending. The forked stick is then used to transfer the strand onto the crosshair mount, which is then shellacked in place.

May have been in an old surveying text book. I don't remember!
