Can thin stainless steel sheet be brazed with oxy / act using standard brazing rod used for plain steel? I have some with white flux on the rod. I know stainless be a bear to solder unless very agressive fluxes are used. Is zinc chloride flux (old plumbers paste) aggressive enough for soldering?
Thanks,
Ron

Re: Brazing Stainless Steel Sheet
I have silver soldered stainless before with no problems.

There's a real good discussion on this topic on http://www.thesheetmetalshop.com/pn/ind ... opic&t=196
Zinc chloride is not good enough. The stainless needs to be thoroughly clean, and a couple of schools of thought hydrochloric or phosphoric. I believe phosphoric to be superior.
I found a page of stainless info that may be a good reference for you

An OA torch with a long feather (absurdly carburizing flame) works
nicely, as the long flame can be laid along the joint (stainless is a
poor heat conductor).
