Crazy Tools

Hi Guys, I thought some of you guys would get a chuckle out of this. Nothign new (modifying tools - and for all I know you can buy these this way, but it allowed me to "reclaim" an otherwise junk set of calipers. These were "freebies" so don't anyone get bent out of shape (get it - these were dropped and bent the ID tangs for lack of the proper term - anyways I don't like to keep them around any machine tools lest I forget the ID stuff is messed up. Enter the need to quickly and accurately scribe the center of some tubing - I can measure the tubing OD and then scribe the center with the same tool. They're also great for laying out a series of holes along the edge of a sheet metal panel (there - that's how I sneak it in THIS forum)
If I didn't have a couple of "good" sets I might have held off with the whizzer wheel [img]/ubb/images/graemlins/grin.gif"%20alt="[/img]

You are not the only one who modifys calipers.... Here is a set I reworked to measure the ID of a ring I was machining. Didn't have a set of calipers long enough to do the measurment & the lip wasn't deep enough to use an inside micrometer.
I use a 1' mic standard to "0" the dial at 1" this then makes the inside points 10.250". Just do the math from there....... Of course I didn't destroy a set of Starrets for this. these were a much used set of 15.00 imports. So the way I have it figured is 0.00$'s & 1/2 hour...... Calipers that will do the job I needed finished at the moment. earned 75.00$ on the job & new tool to the collection!!!!

Jacin,
if you make a base for it and sharpen the jaw(movable on the inside side)
a little you can use it to scribe your sheet metal on a surface plate sorta like
a hieght gauge.. i use a height gauge for marking things for trimming (that will
fit on the plate or the welding bench) comes in handy.
Going to be in your area first of June will try to catch up with you then!
