Rivet Length

Post by MAS »

:?: I am a retired tool maker and never had much to do with sheet metal. I am going to rebuild a wheel for a wind mill. My question is how to you calculate the proper length for rivets? These will be mild steel flat head.
Thanks

I go for one and a half times the diameter of the rivet, sticking out the back. So I cut a 1/4" rivet 3/8" longer than the material thickness.
This is for a rounded head on the upset side.
If you were trying for a countersunk flathead on both sides, obviously you would go shorter, but for most rivets, one and a half times diameter is the ticket.

When I built my Semi-1919a4, that's the rule I followed as well for nice round heads, 1.5xdiameter. I had to redo a few that had over sized holes and leave the rivets a little longer. Keep that in mind if any holes are buggered up.
