Ratchet Wheels

Post by Russ Hanscom »

Here a few hand brake ratchet wheels for the C&T RR, one finished and several as- cast. We have had them cast in CI and DI. The diameter is about 7".

The white perforated objects are ceramic strainers the foundry uses to catch debris. In this case, an original wheel was used for the pattern.

Russ,
Curios about the use of both CI and DI. A good reason, I suppose?

I would expect the DI items to be somewhat better suited to the task, although both would work.

We originally specified DI, but the foundry made a mistake and cast them in CI, then cast more in DI; so not a good reason - just the way it happened!. They gave us the CI at no charge. I think the originals were CI and there is no reason that would not work for the light loads involved.
