Metal casting is something that interests me, but there is no room for another activity in my life. I've lucked into the next best thing. I took a mechanic position in an iron foundry last September.
The company was established in the mid 1800's at the present location.
The picture is the charging of a 50 ton capacity induction furnace. The iron is being dumped into the furnace much faster than normal to work at clearing the throat - the area around the induction coil which is located near the bottom. The iron needs to circulate around the coil by convection. I happened to be working in the area, and of course missed some more spectacular shots.

If there was only one way to do each machining job, the smell of sulphurized cutting oil smoke would have fewer fond memories.
