The Home Machinist!

I completed my latest casting project back in November. Its a small 30" twin belt sander/grinder for general use around the shop for shaping and finishing small wood and metal parts and cleaning, touching-up and sharpening general shop tools such as center punches, drill bits, chisels etc. It does a great job with all of these tasks and gets used on a daily basis.

Looks great. Is that a standard bench grinder motor that you used for power?

Not entirely sure about sufficient power or speed, but VERY nice execution.

Steel or aluminum?

Yes 6" grinder, fully explained in my build.

This was designed as a light machine for small general shop work. It has lots of power for the size belt its running and the work its ment to do (I can't stall it). The speed is 2600 fpm, If it was a larger machine designed for heavy metal removal I would want closer to 5000 fpm but that is not the case here.

The frame is cast aluminum. In my build documentation I take you through the pattern making and casting process. Tool rest assemblies and top wheels are aluminum and the tilt and tension assemblies are welded and bolted steel.
