My shop..s (Garage & Basement)

Post by Matt_Isserstedt »

Here are some photos of my shop (shapers included!) The primary shop is my garage with the remainder of the stuff found in the basement. Note before you get too far in, my pictures are as usual, large. My apologies, I'm still experimenting....

This is where we start, next to the garage door on the left side of the shop, Harig 6x12 surface grinder with one swipe of grey paint to test the new color. This machine has yet to run but I hope to do so in the near future.

Here are the lineup of Craftsman toolboxes, with the Clausing 5914 lathe sandwiched in between.

This is where the Steptoe-Western shaper resides next to its partner the Wellsaw 58B rolling bandsaw.

Here is my main workbench, suitable for welding, storage, hammering and anything less than a tornado. The top is a 5/8" plate which weighs upwards of 600#. Miller EconoTig and Lincoln MiG welders are stored under the table and I just got a Greenlee gang box for storing rigging stuff, jackstands, and other heavy stuff which is more easily "piled" rather than shelved. I've got my rebuilt #1-1/2 arbor press on the top which serves most of the light pressing needs.

A 1980 edition of the Bpt 2J miller, 42" table. Underneath the left side is the Atlas #3 compound arbor press, currently awaiting a floor stand, catalog capacity is 12 tons.

Here is the other half of the Textron millers, an Adcock & Shipley #1ES horizontal miller, another fine machine. The mills compete for table space but I didn't see any clean way around this. Next to this is my power distribution panel, phase converter controls, and the "chemical factory" really mostly lubes, solvents, and paints. A few garden remedies snuck up there too.

Here is the basement shop, dual purpose for woodworking. Powermatic offerings of #66 table saw and #87 bandsaw are visible. My maple workbench houses a Gerstner given to me by my wife and a much older and smaller chest given to my grandfather by my grandmother, late 1930s I'd guess. I'm still using it...I downsized this picture as an experiment which failed (around 25k), I was shooting for 50kB.

Hope you enjoyed the tour!

Nice shop Matt,

Just wondering have you started construction on your new shop? As for the Leblonde lathe, thank god I didn't have to scrap it. I wound up Ebaying it, and making $291 more to put into my machinetool/car account, the guy who picked it up is from vermont and likes antique machines I think he builds steam generators. Now I have my Clausing, its running, with the phase converter and everything. Tonight I am going to machine out the toolpost base (One of those quick change tool posts) to fit, and pretty soon, I hope to be making chips. Good luck with your shop and all of your projects.
