Mill "Transmission"

Post by platypus20 »

About 3 years ago, I bought a Jet JVM 836-1 milling machine, a great machine, but limited in operation because there only 5 speeds, 240-1550 rpm. I made this transmission, the mill now has 20 speeds from 80-3100 rpm, making the mill much easier to use. At the same time, I installed a 4" riser block, a # H8107 from Grizzly, originally made for # G6760 mill, which is identical to the Jet, only a slight modification was necessary to make it fit.

Cool !

I'll stay away from long runs at top speed since you doubled the speed to 3100 RPM.
Try to find out the type of bearing that the mill uses on the spindle.

Designers usually will give 50% to 60% over design intent.
Cheaper machine tools may give less than 50% to save cost.
You're going 100% over design intent.

Long runs a top speed could damage you bearings.

Jose,

Changed the spindle bearings, per Jet they are now good for continous operation at 5000 rpm.

Think about making it look a little cleaner by adding a cover and sell as a kit !!
