Making Progress on My latest effort.

Post by thegallery »

I am making progress with my model hit & miss gas engine. I got the back half completed. Next the cylinder, piston and rod.

Looks good so far. Let us see it when it's finished. Did you design this yourself?

That's pretty work! I'm particularly impressed by the crank.

Beautiful work,

Did you design this yourself or is it from plans?

Jack.

Yes, I seem to never follow plans very well. Some parts are influenced by various plans.

Certainly it is fine work. I don't even comment anymore about that. There is this spring/weight assy on the flywheel I don't understand, it's a damper/counterweight? Could you explain to this dufuss? Obviously, i never got into these.

The weights control the little lever, inside the fly wheel, with the hook on the end. As the engine gains speed this lever is controlled by the weights and it moves inward and locks the push rod that controls the exhaust valve and holds it open. Since the valve is now opened there is no power to the engine so it slows. As the weights descend the lever is unlocked and everything is normal again and the cycle starts over. Thus the whole system controls the speed of the engine, a governor. I grew up on a farm out on the prairies of Minnesota and we used a John Deer hit & miss engine as a utility engine.
