Crossfeed nut
I also had a problem with the cross feed not. Based on the amount i used it i would have to call it a manufactures defect. I currently have .009 play in the cross feed not.
Trying to figure out how i could split the nut like another member suggested.

Backlash eliminator
I am posting two close-up pictures of what my lathe has.
The cross-slide has almost zero backlash, it will spoil you, I promise.
The pointed set-screw splits open the gap eliminating play. It will wear out, but it can be tighten some more until it will have to be replaced.

Re: Seeing pictures
If you can't see pictures after following Jose's advice, your firewall may be blocking them.Jose Rivera wrote:If you have join in the board and have been accepted, you must be login.

Cross feed nut
I have a smithy midas 1720 which I believe is pretty close to identical to the HF44142. The Smity forum has the manual with parts break down for the cross slide. You may be able to get it from Smithy.

Re: HF 44142 - Need new crossfeed nut
Kind of a hybrid, it's 20mm OD, but the pitch is standard 8 threads per inch (8tpi) I would assume it's a trapezoidal thread form since its on a mostly metric machine. Carriage lead is more of the same 20mm but with 6tpi. Toolots.com shows a similar (out of stock) nut for their Bolton BT800 machine @ $43, but no idea if it will work on the 44142.
I spent the day looking for a nut for this family of machines, but am thinking I'll end up making one, maybe with some extra length to add a split for adjusting it
