Smithy chuck and face plate

Post by kenb »

I purchased a Smithy Midas machine a few years back. I've used it on some small projects that didn't require much. Now I have more time on my hands and would like to try and get into some more serious hobby projects. The only chuck I have is the 3 jaw that came with it. I know that there are different types of chuck mountings. Mine has 3 bolts holding the chuck on. I want to purchase a 4 jaw chuck and a face plate. Do I have to purchase these from Smithy, are they unique to the machine, or can I buy another brand and mount it to my lathe.
Thanks, Ken

If the Smithy Midas is anything like the HF 44142 which comes with a plain back 5" 3-jaw chuck, then you can buy an adapter plate for a plain back 5" 4-jaw chuck as item B2227LCA from Busy Bee http://www.busybeetools.com/products/AD ... CHUCK.html. If you want to put a 6" 4-jaw chuck on it then get a HF adapter as part number 29511-0VGA http://www.chaski.com/homemachinist/dow ... &mode=view.

This is a great article. I am bidding on a Smithy AT 300 that does not come with a chuck. The adapter plate from busybeetools looks like it’s just what I will need.
Thanks
