Wanted Brake shoes

Post by jeffsmith »

Wanted; prototype looking brake shoes and heads for freight car service in 1.5" scale. I want to mount them on a 1/4"x 3/8" brake beam channel.
They will need to be a left and right hand parts. Thank you.

At one time Barry Hauge of Superscale was experimenting with 1.5 scale brake heads and brake shoe castings. It was one of many experimental projects he worked on that for whatever reason never did reach his catalog offerings. I was able to purchase a set of the experimental castings from him. Not sure what I did with them as the project they were to be attached to was sold before the trucks were ever completed. I may have to dig around and see if I can find them, a true work of art as was all of the work from Superscale.

I make separate castings for a 33" scale brake shoe, brake shoe head, brake shoe key and a brake beam spreader.
The brake beam is made from a piece of 1/4" square stock and some 5/#2 wire and the spreader.
The brake shoe head go on the ends of the 1/4" square stock.
The 5/32" rod stiffens the bar, like the prototype.
Brake levers and attachments are to your plan
At this time my website is down. I could send you samples of the parts.

Brake shoes are consumables, so I thought, why not print them in PLA (plastic)? This may seem like an abomination to some, but in an age of plastic ties and plastic couplers, why not plastic brake shoes? I installed a set on a caboose last spring, and so far they are working well. Take a look.

Howard’s brake castings are beautiful. I wish he had everything he sells displayed on his website.

Railroad Supply also sells freight car brake parts or did. Need to check their current catalog.

Hello My Friends
I have two different 1-1/2" scale brake shoes. The one on the left is a one piece brake shoe. The other is a three piece show with separate head, shoe and key. The single piece shoes are $12.00 each and the three piece shoe is $25.00 each. They are for 33" wheels, investment cast brass.

Nice!
Do the shoes have the ~2 degree taper cast into their contact surface?

]If this will help... I am in a group where we cast up several parts, amoung them are these brake rings. We make them with 9 shoes per ring, makes it easy to place in a three jaw and gives a spare in case of porosity, loss etc. As you can see we make them thick so that there is plenty to take off and they can be further milled to accomodate a wide range of diameters.
If this is what you like send a PM and we will sell them for $45.00 per ring.
