Hello, An alternative is the diamond shaped aluminium sheet metal for screen door bottoms. I used 3m weather strip cement to glue it to thicker running board and cab flooring sheet metal its been stuck on there since about 1990. Maybe Mcmaster Carr has some sheet stock you could use as well. I have purchased materiaL from a door and glass shop in the past buy extra your friends they maybe thanking you down the tracks . This may help balance the checkbook easier, But if you want the really cool thread plate that good Too.

Jeff, Not sure where you want to use the safety Thread, but you could make it.
I put a construction article in Modeltec maybe 10 years ago on the process
and you can see the two types i made
The platform of the caboose is real easy and the catwalk takes a bit more time

You can also use the grease catching netting from pizza boxes depending on the scale. Someone gave me some a long time ago.

You basically glue it on to the smooth metal surface and then paint the whole thing.

And yes, the Caboose Floor is made from Pizza Netting
The floor is wet primered and the net placed on the wet primer and then re-primered --then painted
