Fairbanks Morse "Y" Oil Engine

Post by Russ Hanscom »

The Chama coal tipple is equipped with a 15 hp Fairbanks Morse oil engine; the crew has been attempting to get it running in preparation for demonstrating the tipple. After a week plus of work and testing, and head scratching, the possible culprit for not starting is a fuel nozzle that squirts but does not atomize.

Along the way, the hot tube got overheated, but it has been replaced and the old one, stainless steel, has had the carbon removed from inside and the pits have been welded up.

We have the manual for the engine, now just looking for a source of parts.

Russ,
On Smokstak.com, there are some guys who know a lot about those old Fairbanks. Go to the "Vintage Diesel" forum. Should be able to get some help...
That would be interesting to see, I intend to ride the Cumbres & Toltec again some day...

Thanks for the lead.

The C&TSR runs from mid May to Mid Oct - fall colors are especially nice...
