Is this electric motor good for a switcher?
I have self propelled sweeper that has an massive 24 volt motor and was wondering if it would make a good electric switcher. It is chain driven. Also

It looks pretty good but the rated RPM is a bit low - you should calculate what (forward) speed you will get with the drivers you propose. ) .1 HP is a bit light (depending on scale).
(I use 4 100W 24V scooter motors on my 1/8 scale streetcar for a bit over 1/2 HP total and a 3:1 reduction. It has LOTS of pulling power, lots of speed, and good acceleration.)

My calculations come close too .25hp. I could be wrong.
Have a good one....John.

not accounting for losses,6491 wrote:My calculations come close too .25hp. I could be wrong.
i personally feel, its a little on the light side and may not give you the results you are looking for.
its better to over power the loco and learn to deal with slippage (aka throttle control) then to under power and let the magic smoke out.
I run 1 500 watt scooter motor (my1020) in my boxcabs and more then enough power for a 325lbs locomotive tho, i am running four 500 watt motors in this. which on paper is over kill,
If it is not live steam. its not worth it.

CBREW,
Your Steam engine looks Great but, I have to ask what the Diesel loco is. That looks pretty nice also.
And, do you make your own trucks and journal boxes for It and the boxcab? They look a little different.
Thank you.

the large diesel is based off a F59ph (think amtrak or commuter service)chooch wrote:CBREW,

i did take some modeler license with the design tho.
as pictures, the cab is still needing finishing with the paint (waiting on paint masks)
this is the sister engine (build both of them, started last november) the box cab is based off the GE 23 tonner (just a little larger scale)
everything is my design on both locos, tho i am using Railroad supplies journals on the boxcabs

Re: Is this electric motor good for a switcher?
Totally agree, I don't think overpowering is a bad thing. I would much prefer having the motor idling along than burning its guts out.
My little loco has a 6.5hp petrol driving the alternator and a 750watt electric under it. The petrol is set at just a fast idle but has no problems generating up to 50volts for the drive. For normal running I find about 28volts plenty. Traction motor is 36volts.

I gave the self propelled sweeper to my brother in law to scrap. I was trying to save the motor.

CBREW,
Poetic, Artist or Modeler license, I don`t care. Both of your Diesel locomotives look great to me. I especially like the larger one, F59ph. Nice builds. Thanks for the photos.
