Realizing this is an internal combustion reference, some of the park train manufacturers ran from an automatic transmission down to a multi belt or chain 'drum' in the center of the chassis. From there, they used pretty much standard automotive driveshafts with a universal on each end, connected to a gearbox on the inner axle of each truck. Being splined, the driveshafts get longer or shorter as the trucks swivel into and out of curves.
