Hi,
my first loco on 5"-gauge was built in plywood. Prototype was a German Gmeinder light railway loco first, which got later "americanized" with a wooden cab.
A few years later, I build a new shell, based on an 1/4-scale model train boxcab loco. Material was plywood again. Meanwhile, the loco got sold, but is still in use.
There's some build-report on my blog.

Re: Locomotive built of wood
George Byrkit of Largo, FL and his son Steve are recreating my 1-1/2’ scale Berkshire in wood, even using my drawings.
The wood is walnut and no fillet material will be used. It will be displayed using the natural walnut coloring with a wipe-on polyurethane. Regular metal fasteners are used.
Sketchup 3D modeling software is used to model the parts prior to creating the individual cut sheets for the pieces.
To give you an idea, the front spreader had almost 20 separate cut sheets and almost 30 walnut parts to be assembled and then detailed. Almost 30 hours of work for one component!
The results of their work are well, as you can see, beyond belief.
