Measuring Tape Oddity

Post by RichD »

I have several import (Work Force) 12' tapes I use in the shop, around the house, etc.
The blade has the usual USA 16" stud spacing markings.
Just by chance while pondering a layout project on a new heavy wooden shelving unit
I noticed an odd tiny tick mark on the edge. Looking further they appear at regular
intervals. Question is, what do they represent?
My first thought was 1/2 and 1 meter intervals (on and inch rule), but the one mark
closest to a meter, 39.37" is about an inch short of that.
Anyone have a clue?

That is another spacing divided into 8 feet. I have seen it used on floor joist spacing. One less joist in 8 feet as compared to 16 inch spacing.

38 2/5 " or 19 1/5" per space. That would be 5 per 8 ft.
Wonder where that would be used?

And the winner is! :D
Jtrain probly has it right. 96"/5 = 19.200" exactly as marked. A tick is precisely on 8 ft.
An alternate joist or rafter spacing.

I've seen that used for stud spacing on interior non-load-bearing walls.

There is no stud, rafter or joist spacing that is 19.2 inches that I ever saw. There's 16 O/C and 24 O/C.

If you go to most joist span calculators, 19.2" is one of the choices available for spacing:
