Color Code for Treadmill Motor Wires?

My DC treadmill motor arrived. Far as I know, "DC" means positive and ground, but this thing has 4 wires. Is there a convention that will tell me which ones make it go?

Wondering if I can test it by hooking it up to a battery charger. I just want to see if it moves or not so I can give my Ebay feedback and get on with life.

Well, now that I can see it better, red is + and black is -.

Now if I just knew what the two blue wires do. It's surprisingly hard to come up with a schematic on Google.

Sensors! Right? What else could they be? I'm thinking tachometer.

It turns fine with 12V applied. Smooth and silent.

It reverses just fine. I read that if the brushes are perpendicular to the shaft, a DC motor will be reversible. Don't know if it's always true, but it sounds logical.

I believe the blue wires are the overheat sensor. The tach on all the treadmills I have seen is a slotted or striped disc that rotates between the legs of an optical sensor. It is on the end of the treadmill drive roller. Dennis

Dennis is correct. The blue wires are to a overtemp switch.
What type of controller did you get? I'm partial to the MC-60 series treadmill controllers. I have 3. One powers my X2 mill with a 2.5 hp motor, one is on my sand muller, and one is waiting on installation in my 7x lathe.

Sounds like my Lathemaster 8x14 lathe needs a donor treadmill! Tired of belt changes, variable speed would be very nice.

Not to be pedantic, but all brushes are perpendicular to the shaft.
To be reversible the plane of the brushes must be perpendicular to the plane of the magnets, rendering the axial view symmetrical.

I took "perpendicular to the shaft" to mean perpendicular to a tangent to the side of the shaft and also perpendicular to the axis. Not sure if that's what you mean.

Sometimes the brushes are offset and create "timing" with the armature. Such motors are much more efficient in one direction than another...
