It's not at all unusual for a wheel to go out of round when grinding offhand. Once the object being ground starts bouncing, it feeds on itself. It may also be exacerbated by a less than uniformly hard wheel.

What kind of wheel/stone did you buy. If you bought a soft one made for grinding tool steel and HSS and had at it with soft angle iron it will go out of round quickly. There should be a code of letters and numbers on the paper blotters or the box it came in. What is the code?
