He fellows,I have a Southbend 10 with 2 1/4 -8 spindle thread,I bought a 4jaw chuck from a friend with 1 1/2 dia. thread,my question is should I try to bore and thread or buy a back plate with right thread?

You have the big bore heavy 10. There are lots of backplates/chucks out there for that thread. Do some serious looking around before you put time into making one.

Like 10K said. Right now, you have a decent 1 1/2" X 8 back plate. Start from a normal 2 1/4" one and true it up to fit your chuck.

There is probably not enough "meat" in the spigot to bore it out enough.
Sell the 1-1/2x8 and use the money to buy one the right size.
There are SOOOOOO many 9" South Bends, smaller Logans and 10-12" Atlas lathes that use that size that you will have NO trouble selling.
