What is it???

Post by Rick »

A friend sent me this picture. Anyone have any ideas of what it may be?

I have seen something similar that was used to set exact lengths on connection rods. Possibly to set up linkages.

Ever watch "Ask this old house?"

We should have have a wrong answer reply protocol for "What is this"? questions. Not to infringe on correct answers, but for entertainment value.

All this rambling aside I have no idea what that is.

My initial thought was a set of chassis punches, but I don't think so.

Do the inserts fit inside the part in the lower left?

I'm liking it because. I don't know why the oak box unless it is Sikorsky or earlier helicopter special tools. Note the other pin head. I'm liking this to pieces.

Hold on. That box cannot be oak for it would destroy those gages.

Found out a bit more info. The piece in the lower left corner with the two small rods is an optical piece. It is focused by sliding up and down on the rods. My friend found this at the train show in Atlanta this weekend. The guy that had it buys up estate sales (mainly machinist stuff), he doesn't know what it is either.

Hmm, very interesting.

If the object in the lower left is a focusing device, then the other pieces are apertures. The smaller the aperture, the greater the depth of field (I'm a photographer.)

Possibly something used in surveying?

Man. I have to be very careful at guessing about things these days.
For an example there was a bunch of stuff which appeared to be some type resonance comparator. Optics which didn't seem related...
It was the early "light" stick for csi to detect , well, blood.
Apparently there were separate sections, units which would tune into the wave length to detect certain composition of traces. A meter and feeder to a certain printer. Dang. this was old before I knew I was. :)
