Stuff to go With Brace?

Post by SteveHGraham »

Found a decent price on a Pexto brace with a Samson chuck. People say they are useful around the shop. Keith Fenner uses one for countersinking/deburring.

Question: what should I get to go with it?

I don't think a countersink made for a mill or drill press is quite right for a brace.

These kind of adaptors are handy.

I bought a patternmaker's tool box, it had a Pexto in it.

I have read that Samson chucks will hold round tools. Guess I will find out.

I've got a few old school braces from yard sales, mostly mounted with counter-sink and deburr tools of various sizes. Couple of bucks each, maybe $5 at the most for any of them. I'm just using the OEM chucks provided, and appreciate their utility quite a lot.

Most 'newer' (ca 1950's) braces will hold round bits just fine. I like Miller's Falls, and have... um, well... just a "few" of them. My favorite is an 8". If you plan on drilling a tree stump, a 12" or 14" will give you more leverage, but whether you need it depends a bit on the tree species.

Where a brace really shines is with augur bits. They come in two patterns: solid center and Jenning's Pattern. The solid center bits are less prone to bending, but the Jenning's bits are just cool.
