On the machine I am rebuilding I remember taking off some strange locking washers. At the time I knew where to find them in the McMaster Carr catalog, but I've forgotten that detail. They were a flat area about the diameter of a nut with about 12 tabs that stuck out beyond the nuts diameter. They were used between a pair of standard nuts that were adjusted to desired tightness on a shaft. Then the tabs were bent over the hex nuts with the 1,3,5,7 tabs bent over one nut and the 2, 4, 6 tabs bent the opposite way over the other nut.
To get the machine apart I had to pry the tabs up and in doing so I destroyed the usefulness of the washers. Now I'm almost ready to reassemble the parts of the machine that use these washers. (It would take only 15 minutes to create a drawing, but I don't know how I'd attach it to the note.) Can anybody go from my description the a name that McMaster Carr search would recognize?

TomB: didn't find any washers as you described. However, the tab lock washer does a similar job but has only 2 tabs.https://www.mcmaster.com/tab-lock-washers

The name is tabwasher or tab washer. A quick search of the web will turn up just about anything you might need. Too many to list here.

The links are good but I don't see what I think is appropriate. The ones pic'd are biased to one side. They also look to be thin springy metal. The closest I can find are "axle lock washers" or variation of that. You need a metal which is flat and each tab can be bent in either direction and has key tooth. Probably me but the net overwhelms sometimes.

Hi. Seastrom was one of those sites which showed the exact type. It isn't the same as the link but they have them. This is really old stuff and I think they can be found "in the back" of auto parts stores. There may not be a # in their database but there are many sizes in drawers. It is flat simple thing.
