suspended recumbent trike finished

Post by toglhot »

I started this project some time ago but before finishing I bought an XS650 so the trike has been on the backburner for a while. I decided on a new trike as I wasn't mad keen on the last one, it having a few things I didn't like about it: rear wheel spin, rough ride and the welding was atrocious. This trike goes someway to resolving those issues.

The wheelbase is a little shorter and due to the extra height allowance for the rear suspension I've also increased the track. Gone is the 5 degree camber as it wasn't friendly on tyres. This frame is made from 32mm tube rather than 30mm RHS, that combined with the suspension has probably added a couple of kgs to the trike's weight.
The lever steering has been retained and a few extra idlers added for the chain. Two aluminium half moon brackets have been added for suspension and aluminium brackets fabricated for disk brake mounts.

In brief: 32mm tube frame,
20"wheels at front,
700c whear at back,
hydraulic disk brakes, deore components,
27 speeds,
alloy seat with lumbar support.
rear parcel rack,
9 position adjustable rear suspension,
Delrin bushes for stubs and swingarm pivot,
delrin chain guides with sealed bearings,
aluminium suspension brackets and caliper mounts,
lever steering.

The trike is higher and wider than the previous so it looks quite large. I went for a quick spin yesterday and the suspension works a treat smoothing out potholes and such.

Being a serial builder of stuff, I've started a new frame. Whilst this one works good and looks great I'm after something else: lower, narrower, lighter, racier. Stay tuned, the drawing is on the bench as I write. I can't improve on the comfort level as these type seats are super comfortable, I think another recumbent trike would bring the number up around the eight mark. Just can't help myself!
