Tapping carbon fiber tubing

Post by Steve S »

Does carbon fiber wear tooling quickly ?
I'm on the fourth hole and believe the tap is worn out ...
Tap is a M21 x 1mm brand new .
I'm using Imperial sizing die wax for a lubricant .

Operating machines is perfectly safe......until you forget how dangerous it really is!

What GlennW said, I did a bit vacuum bagging carbon fiber and the best cutting tool was tungsten carbide grit
cutting wheels, but that has nothing to do with tapping.

For tapping could you use threaded inserts instead ?
They can be glued in with a structural epoxy, you would still have to drill for the inserts, .

Maybe You need Metric sizing die wax instead! :)

Tap make?
Tap Type?
Are you tapping the bore of Carbon Fibre tube?
If so why, and have you considered the impact of that on it's structural integrity?

Years ago, my brother was a mechanic.

He had so many different spray cans of stuff that a friend joked that when he had his car in for work and my brother asked him to get him the car cleaner, he said that my bother yelled "that's the imperial one, I need the metric one".

Oh yes graphite dulls tool steel cutting surfaces quickly, we used diamond coated carbide tooling for machining graphite like used to make EDM electrodes where I used to work.

HSS plug tap
I made a couple of carbon fiber shrouds for my pcp air rifles .
It's a modified Kral NP-03 in .177 , shoots a 9.57gr pellet at 910fps . Over 17ft/lbs energy

Looks great Steve!
I've been abrading the inside of CF tube and bonding in threaded inserts for barrel shrouds.
