At what point do you measure the rope diameter?

Bill--

Re: "At what point do you measure the rope diameter?"

It varied. My results also varied. A lot. Was it due to temperature? Humidity? Variation in rope diameter at different points? My technique?

It could not have been my absolutely accurate digital caliper.

I tried that. But it is hard get a good reading on the diameter with a tape measure. Try it. You'll see.

Every hangman knows measuring rope is unnecessary. It is self adjusting.

Bill--

In all seriousness, I mentioned using calipers as a joke. I do use mine for quick measurements in the shop, but nothing that I must rely upon. I usually use them while roughing.

But thank you for teaching me something I did not know!

I agree that calipers, digital or vernier are not good for finished work, but if you need to find out if your calipers are close, I recommend these gadgets for checking.

Gages sometimes make a difference.

The problem with calipers isn't restricted to digital. How they are applied is part of the problem of less than acceptable measurements, plus their fragile construction, of necessity, lends itself to the problem of reliable readings. There's just too many ways that improper.........................................................

That's how I feel about calipers unless they are used for rough measurements, much the same as one would use a ruler.

I purchased a few months ago an 8" left-handed digital caliper. It works better on the lathe, when the end of the caliper is on the machine operators side. You have less things in the way when measuring.

When measuring rope, wrap a strip of paper around the rope and mark where the end meets the mark. Divide this by Pi (3.14) and that is the diameter of the rope. A tape measure is not good for this purpose. You can also use a tape used by sewing people. It can be wrapped around a rope easily.

I don't have gage blocks, but I do have plug gages. I wonder if they will work about the same?
