Cutting Internal Keyways

Post by tornitore45 »

I remember a description of a procedure to cut keyways in pulley
bore.
The procedure described some kind of bushing to back up the tool from
flexing.
It was not a general purpose tool like the hand lever, the adapter was machined for just the specific tool size and bore size.

Searcing for "cutting keyway" is too generic, and did not work.

Can somebody help locating the message?

Thanks

For a one-off, you can mount a boring bar (or perhaps just a long HSS blank), appropriately ground, on the lathe carriage or mill spindle, and just rack it back-n-forth while advancing a couple thou at a time. Basically, use it like a shaper/slotter. Otherwise, use a file, or a broach. Maybe a shaper of course. I've got a slotter head for my Bridgeport. And if the ID is over an inch or so, you can even use offset heads or attachments like a Quil-Master.

The run out in bad chucks can chage with the diameter of the item in the chuck too. But my real peave is the slop in the qwills of thes peices of junk!

Whene you try to enlarge a hole or counter sink, the chatter can be horrible. I find its best to counter sink first in wood and then drill the hole.

I got a mini mill, and if it fits on there, i drill it there, metal or wood. I have had the opertunity to use real good drill press and they are a world of difference. Any one I buy in the future will be a good old one!
