South Bend Heavy 10, Crying in my beer!
South Bend Heavy 10, Crying in my beer!
Wouldn't you just know it???? I've been working on my new Grizzly 3-In-One for couple of weeks now getting it all trimmed up, adjusted and working great! Now my buddy has just bought a larger Clausing and wanted to know if I wanted to buy his South Bend cause he needs the room. The Heavy 10 comes with more extras than the law otta allow. He has five other lathes and wants to let this '40's lathe go. Yes he is in the machine shop business. I'm now thinking of going ahead and buying it and storing it until I can do something with my 3-In-One. Price is too good to pass up and I know that is the lathe he goes to when he wants close tolerance accuracy. 3-Phase would have to be dealt with for me to use it. Do I need this lathe? No. Do I want this South Bend? Yes.

A Heavy 10 is the only smaller older SB I would even consider owning. If you got the $$$ grab it. 3phase for that can be a VFD or static converter no prob!!

The only problem right now is having to move it to storage somewhere. Moving that heavy sucker would be a major task for me. I think it probably weights around 1500 pounds with stand. Have to disassemble down to all its parts. It's so funky greasy dirty that it would not be a bad thing to disassemble and restore to it's former painted glory. It came out of a WWII submarine and has been family owned for at least 30 or more years.John Evans wrote:A Heavy 10 is the only smaller older SB I would even consider owning. Don't think too hard. Just buy it and worry about how to move it later. Time always permits solutions to problems to come forth.

I think the taper attachment alone is worth about $400-$500 as I have seen on eBad. I just don' know if I've got the stamina to get-r-done and the additional costs involved to build another shop just for it. I possibly could cut the floor out of my existing shop and pour a cement pad under and between the floor joists.

I think you are a bit heavy on your weight idea ,more in the 1000-1100 lb range I would think.

Correct. Those things are generally in the low 1000 lb range, depending on cabinet and accessories. Stripped with the cast under-drive cabinet I think they were around 900 lbs.

Hi There,
In checking the SBL 1950 catalog, the shipping weight for a Heavy Ten
on a cabinet depends on the length of the lathe bed. This is what I found:
Crated Weight:
3 ft bed = 960 lbs.,
3.5 ft bed = 990 lbs.,
4 ft bed = 1060 lbs.
Boxed Weight:
3 ft bed = 1310 lbs.,
3.5 ft bed = 1360 lbs.,
4 ft bed = 1410 lbs.
I don't know what the different is between the "crated" and "boxed," but I
suppose that it has something to do with the container the lathe is shipped in.
Good Luck!

The crated weight probably includes accessories like chucks, steady and follow rests, face plate, tail stock, etc
