new guy, old lathes

Post by dig it »

Hello from Idaho. I recently acquired an old mini lathe. This is a lightly used Ward manufacturing with a tube bed, This was made in Sussex, England some where around 1925-1927. I would like to hear from anyone that has info on this type of lathe. I have found out that this is similar to the Silver Queen mini lathe.

I did some searching myself last night and can see there's not much around about that lathe. Given it's age and being British made, https://www.model-engineer.co.uk/forums/ or http://modeleng.proboards.com/ might? get you a bit more information if you join those and post the same question. There's some very knowledgeable members on both those forums. And it's likely one or two might even have the same lathe.

Ah - "Wade" - not "Ward". H.W. Ward of England made heavy turrett lathes, and other heavy machine tools.
CAV that made Wade lathes later morphed into CVA Jigs and Moulds, and made among other things, the beast of a vertical mill/die sinker that is in my shop.
A short history:

No worries. I enjoy the history of the companies as well as the tools. I've wondered for years why CAV (a man's initials) changed their name to CVA Jigs and Molds. My mill proudly states it was made in Hove, Sussex. And how did a mill from Hove, Sussex end up in the Pratt and Whitney factory in New York State? I still have the original 50hz motor, I have a US made 60hz motor on it now.
