The collet chuck we got in the shipyard was 5C and made in Germany. It worked pretty much like the one you have. The handle was straight up and the bolt went down and attached to the bed much like a steady rest. Only a lower plate and upper plate. You would have a nut on the top plate and one underneath the lower plate. This would tighten both plates clamping it solid to the bed. This would allow the handle to be moved forward to loosen the collet and back to tighten the collet. Worked rather well, but I still prefer the lever type closer that goes through the spindle.
