Help Tracking parts+Manual for Honden L450 Lathe

Post by potzkin »

hello all,
I recently got a nice present, an Honden L450 lathe, after long GOOGLE search i couldn't find the manufacture in order to trace parts (the Half-nut mechanism need to be replaced, spare sprockets and so on).
along my searches i found in some forum someone says it is called also McMillian or Repco saying that they are common lathe in Australia, but i could not find those either..
from what i could fetch it is Taiwan manufacturer.

can anybody help identify this lathe please?

I have a Honden L560 circa 1982. I have the manual that I got with it. The only interesting difference between manual and lathe seems to be the handles arrangement on the apron. Manual shows American arrangement, Lathe is UK arrangement. This is trivial.

Anyway if anyone wants the manual please send me your email and I will scan up a pdf and send it

I found the manual recently after a long search - I am trying to figure out how to change oil in headstock and I cannot find oil exit or drainplug - it isnt in the manual - anyone know where it is located? or like many minor features on the L560 maybe the answer is "there isnt one"
Anybody know for sure?

Hello and welcome to Your board now! There is that thing about hand wheels and English. You probably already know but the standard is to the left side. If the lathe has a gap bed insert, the handwheel is to the right side. These gap fitments are very tight/ for they must be and may be painted over. Another thing is look at the "rack" teeth under the forward bed rail. If the rack is interrupted and another section is close to the head, gap bed. This stuff used to be obvious but staining and paint makes it less so.Headstock oil, cain't say from here but swab it out. Since you already know it is important, you will do it to your satisfaction and that will probably be better than a drain. Drain info can come later but don't think you are alone by swabbing and cleaning beyond what would be.

Swab? I dont think so - probably I wasnt clear: the oils I want to change are in the spindle bearings. Oil goes in via two spring lid cups above but user-wards of the bearings, covering oil holes maybe 1/16" diam. So it goes in, level displays in the two sight-glasses, and that is it. How can I change it without somewhere to drain it from?

Bed gap: My saddle handwheel is on the right but no gap in bed. Maybe later models.

That's the answer!

Just the bearing pockets themselves contain the oil.

The sight glass may be removable in order to wick the oil out, but they may also break when trying to remove them.

Removing the spindle and bearings may be the answer.

In that case I think my oil will operate in "write-only" mode. ie add only. I started removing the spindle once and got faint hearted that I might do something I couldnt undo and backtracked pretty quick.
Thanks Glenn

There were larger Hondens to where it may have applied but I should have looked at your pic. There is still ... forget that. These oil level sights have an Allen screw to where they are filled. There is a port above the bearings which appears to be a lube point but it doesn't go anywhere except the outer race of a bearing. Different lathe but the oil gages do become dirty. I think it is a centrifugal type of lube where the oil from the site gage is pulled into the bearings and cycled back into the sight gage. That means any closure to the breather holes above the bearings, interrupts the designed flow. I could be wrong on that too.
