Check here:

It seems to indicate a short MT4.

Morse taper angles are of a relationship between the small/plug diameter(D) and the large /"end of socket" diameter(A), at a set length or depth. Where "P" is standard plug depth, A-D over P is taper per inch. Said another way, MT#2 has a different taper than #3 or #4 etc. So if a person has a spindle which is half#3 Morse taper and sorta fits another taper to the shank, it would be confusing.

Hi there,

I am also a Chipmaster owner, and searching for the adapter that supposedly came with the lathe
If I not mistaken it is a Morse taper 4.5 (it is inbetween 4 and 5 in size), and is also found on Harrison lathes. I also belive the taper to be as on Morse 3? or was it 4 or 5?

Hi There,

The elusive Morse 4.5 spindle taper was used on Clausing 5900 and 6900
series lathes as well as the Rockwell 11" lathes too.

Good Luck!

The "L" long nose taper, by its physics restricts the internal diameter. It was precise location within the chuck, for support. A Chipmaster being a Colchester, may have a L0 which is much larger than the L00 of a Rockwell 11 or 14". It is there where it becomes the difference of 2 1/2 MT or 3 1/2 MT. The lock ring of L0 is about 5 1/2" dia. at the thread.

Measured L00 and md is about 3.738 on the external chuck thread.
